Are Dental Implants Permanent?

Dental implants are permanent prosthetic roots that are used to replace the tooth that is lost due to any gum disease, injuries or tooth decay.  As the dental implants have to be fused with the jaw bone and the gum tissues, it is essential that the patient is enjoying good oral and general health. He/she should also be enjoying good and healthy gum tissues. Moreover the patient should have adequate bone mass in the jaw. The procedure for the dental implants is spread over many weeks.

The first consultation involves the evaluation of the patient. The dentist evaluates the oral health of the patient as well as his/her general health. The dentist will then decide whether the patient is the candidate for the dental implant or not. The dentist will also evaluate the jaw bone mass and if it is less then will take steps to augment it.

The dentist will take various x-rays and scans of the mouth for deciding the plan of action. He/she will then discuss with the patient the whole procedure. The second step involves the placing the titanium post implant in the jaw bone at the determined place. After this the implant is allowed to fuse with the surrounding tissues. This procedure takes many weeks.

The third step takes place only when there is proper healing. During this phase, a small nick is made and an abutment is placed on the post on which the crown or the bridge is placed. The patient has to take proper oral care and maintain good oral hygiene for the implant to last lifelong. For learn more about Dental Implants Visit Smile Creations
